National Prep Tournament moved from Lehigh and other Covid inspired changes

The new year has started with more delays, closings, and restrictions on athletics. While most have not been as draconian as last year, they are influencing this years events. One for certain end of year change will be in the National Prep tournament, which for the first time in memory will not be held at Lehigh University. Unless some changes occur it may be a rough go to have a full fledged event in DC as the City is ratcheting up their restrictions and requirements as well.   Closer to home Harford County is restricting athletic events to contestants only.

Updates in the year of Covid

The 2022 wrestling season is underway and for the most part, it has been going as planned. Recently however some Covid outbreaks in several counties have led to what are now temporary suspensions of activities. Howard County has suspended winter activities till the new year and several other schools have had outbreaks that have led to school-specific suspensions. 1994 Season

The 1994 season was an important one in Maryland high school wrestling. It was the last year of the MSA conference– which had included most Baltimore area private schools and all the Baltimore City public schools. The MSA tournament went as the previous 18 had gone with a Mount St. Joseph team title. The Baltimore City public schools did not travel to Lehigh University for the National Prep Tournament but Dunbar’s Bruce Pendles took Outstanding Wrestler honors as the City schools ended their run with the privates. The National Prep results had not been available for this year but Maryland

1991 Update

When I had gathered the information for the 1991 National Prep tournament I only had the team scores. recently I got a hold of the full brackets for that year’s tournament and added in the Maryland All Americans from that year. There were 21 all-Americans that year– though despite having 5 Marylanders in the finals that year DeMatha’s 103lber Myner Herrera was the only National Prep Champ that year.

Maryland wrestlers at National Preps in the 80s

I spent a little time looking over some old brackets for the National Prep tournament and it is remarkable how Maryland schools dominated in the 1980s. Mount St. Joe started a run there with a National Prep title in 1980, took a year off, and then won two more in 1983 and 1984, and closed out the decade with a title in 1989. That is a pretty remarkable run of success but Mount St. Joe’s four titles would be equaled by four titles from Bullis, who was able to run off a pretty incredible run of four consecutive titles in

Updates and Fact Checking

As it looks like there will be a full high school sports season for 2022 a little time has been spent updating the website with new information and fixing some mistakes and oversites from years past. The tweaks are going in reverse chronological order but the first big oversite has been found and corrected. McDonogh School Muraji Nakazawa has been recognized for his 1975 National Prep championship. Rick Romeo of Mount St. Joseph placed 4th in the 1977 National Prep Tournament. There will be more errors that need to be corrected as time goes on and if you notice one
