Notes: Southern Garrett’s Brutus Scheffel won his fourth consecutive public school state championship. In doing so he amassed three pins and a major decision. Scheffel joins Steve Kessler of Owings Mills, Matt Slutzy of Aberdeen, and Josh Asper of Hereford as a four-time champion. In winning the championship Southern Garrett had a record five finalists.

Notes: Reservoir of Howard County won their first state Championships this year. They completed a tri-fecta of winning the Howard County tournament, the 3A/4A State Dual Meet Tournament and the 3A/4A state championship. 145 lb wrestler Mark Colabucci was Reservoir’s first individual championship. North County’s champion Pat Downey won a championship last year in the 1A/2A division at Loch Raven High School. Frank Goodwin of Arundel had won a private school state championship at Mount St. Joseph.

A good example of personal good sportsmanship occurred in the 140lb finals when leading 8-3 Vaughters slammed Romero to the mat. Visibly shaken Romero got back to his feet and the two competitors completed the last 12 seconds of the match giving Vaughters his second state championship.
