The 1990’s saw another expansion in the number of wrestling champions as the states private and parochial school established a state wide championship from the state’s non public schools. Under the auspices of the MSWA the
schools that had competed in only conference finals would now face each other in an end of year tournament. The MIS (Maryland Independent School) tournament is born.

The MPSSAA also established a new championship for wrestling teams. The state dual meet championships were established in 1994 to crown the best dual meet team in the state between the two classifications 4A-3A -- large schools-- and 2A-1A -- small schools. The participating teams must first qualify and win a regional championship based on school size and geographic location. The regions are North, South, East and West.

1994 is the last year of the MSA tournament. It’s 74 year history ends with the birth in 1995 of the MIAA.
