After some research I have added some results for Maryland wrestling in 1996. In some ways it was a different world for Maryland wrestling in others twenties years have hardly changed the major players in the sport.
Significantly for the time Maryland was operating under the 13 weight classes for the time 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 275. I wonder what some of those matches between a 189lb and a 275lb looked like. Must have been mismatches there.
On the National Prep scene DeMatha won the National Prep Championship and the at the time 2 year old private school MIS tournament. It was truly a remarkable team led by a four time national Prep champion Todd Beckerman at 125 who was named outstanding wrestler, runner up places in Billy Phillips at 140, and Robert Alexander at 145. Also on that team were Willie Harris, Drew Robertson and Wes Cummings.
In recent years Dematha has fallen off and Good Counsel has picked up the roll of big dog in the Washington Area wrestling scene.
There were only five teams in Carroll county with Westminster and Francis Scott Key sitting at top. Francis Scott Key made a remarkable run to finish as dual meet 1A/2A runners up.
As they did in 2016, Damascus finished on top of 3A/4A with the state tournament championship. There seems to be no let up with the Hornets as they have remained competitive in the upper tier of Maryland wrestling for the last twenty years.
Howard county was run by Hammond, who was still hosting one of the most competitive state wrestling tournaments in its Hammond Tournament, not yet shut down and replaced by Mount Mat Madness.
In the 1A/2A Division and in Baltimore County coach Guy Pritzker's Owings Mills repeated as state champions and would go on to be runners up in 1997. At this point they are in the middle of a six year run of making the semifinals of the 1A/2A dual meet tournament.
From time to time a school district in Maryland will open or close a high school, and a high school wrestling program will be born or will die. This year will be the last year that North Carroll High School in Carroll County will compete in the MPSSAA wrestling championships.
The school has had a remarkable history in the state. While it never had the dominating run of Beall High School which won state titles in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1987, before being combined and consolidated over a series of years into what is now Mountain Ridge High School, it still produced a host of individual state champions and a dozen top finishes in the state.
One particularly remarkably strong team the school produced was the 1994 3A/4A state dual meet champion team that did not contain a single individual state champion or runner up.
The team competed in several state classifications.
In 1983 they finished second to Beall in class BC. In 1984 they finished 3rd to Beall again.
Reclassified to AA-A they finished in 3rd place in 1986.
They were runners up in 3A/4A in 1989
They were 3A/4A State dual meet champions in 1994
In 2006 they were second in 3A/4A.
Over the years North Carroll produced at least these state champions (my records are not complete)
1983 126lbs Bryan Zepp – BC
1984 98lbs Danny Thomas—BC
1985 138lbs Doug Thomas—BC
1986 119lbs Danny Thomas –AA-A
145lbs Doug Thomas – AA-A
1988 UNL Bill Ferencz- AA-A
1989 275lbs Bill Ferencz 3A/4A
1990 145lbs Dave Foster 3A/4A
1991 152lbs Dave Foster 3A/4A
1995 135lbs Tom Kiler 1A/2A
1998 106lbs Fran Jackson 3A/4A
171lbs Adam Boog 3A/4A
1999 125lbs Fran Jackson 3A/4A
2006 140lbs Tyler McLeod 3A/4A
2009 125lbs Mason Goretsis 3A/4A
145lbs Kyle Lemmon 3A/4A
2014 170lbs Eddie Merrill 1A/2A
2015 132 Owen Rill 1A/2A
The Maryland public school regional qualifying tournaments are over. The brackets are listed here on our page of 2016 brackets. (Still missing are the brackets from the 1a2a West Region, when they are available they too will be listed.) Maryland sent a strong contingent to the National Prep Championship and for the first time in a long time came home with plenty of All-Americans but no National Prep Championships. Still getting all of the county results up on the site, some counties make the results harder than you would think to find. The MPSSAA regional tournaments are done and the Public School boys are looking at the 1A/2A and 3A/4A brackets and getting ready for Public School states next weekend.
Final results are coming in from the Counties and league championships. It sure looks like little changes for the dominant programs in the state.Repeat champions this year: WCAC- Good Counsel IAC —Georgetown Prep Bayside — North Caroline Carroll County — South Carroll Montgomery County — Damascus Great writeup of Montgomery tournament by Robert Yi Prince Georges County — Parkdale UCBAC — Bel Air 2016 BracketsAnd of course repeating as 3A/4A Champions in the Dual Meet tournament was Damascus of Montgomery County. Joining the Hornets as Dual Meet Champions was the Middletown.
Brackets page is up for 2016
I am off to a slow start recording the 2016 Maryland wrestling season, but will try to keep up with who is doing what now that the growth allowance has kicked in.
As usual anyone with results, anecdotes, updates, and corrections send them in.
One of the bigger shifts in Maryland High school wrestling has been the growth of the dual meet tournament. In an attempt to capture as much of this action as possible I will
try and keep track of the schools winning these tournaments.
