Regions and Preps

The National Prep tournament is the end of the road for private school wrestlers. All in all Maryland did very well as the had at least one All-American in every weight class, and an astonishing 5 of the 8 in 220.

This weekend was also the time for the MPSAA regional tournaments. The wrestlers in the 3A/4A and 1A/2A public schools got their tickets punched for next weeks public school state tournament. The last one to be held in the venerable Cole Field house on the grounds of the University of Maryland.

Robert Yi has written a good piece about the 3A/4A West region.

End of Counties

All of the counties have finished their championships and the MPSSAA regionals are taking place. The private school qualifiers are in Lehigh for the National Prep Tournament.

2015 Some Early results

A Saturday snow storm threw a monkey wrench on to many of the county and end of year wrestling tournaments this weekend. In the MIS state tournament McDonogh was able to beat back a strong challenge by John Carroll and Good Counsel to defend their state championship title. Because of the impending forecast the tournament directors decided to wrestle all the preliminary and consolation rounds Friday night saving Saturday morning for finals matches and placement rounds.

In Howard County the 1A/2A Dual champion Oakland Mills team continued its resurgence as they won their first county title since 1995.

2015 Season

As the 2015 Maryland wrestling season rolls into year end tournament time I am going to try and update as much of the action as possible
more quickly than I have been able to in the past. In season tournament brackets, except for dual meet tournaments, have been collected and posted under the 2015 Brackets page. As the county and league championships finish up I will post them to the 2015 season page as they come in.

As in the past I invite anyone who is a fan to write with commentary on the matches and tournaments they have seen. Provide photos, reviews, news stories as well and I will add them to the results. It is almost always more fun to read more than a box score or a bracket sheet, but those are fun too.

Looking at MIS states it should be a dog fight as the newly crowned MIAA champion John Carroll Patriots look to take their next step and win the whole thing. To do so they will have to beat defending state champions McDonogh and WCAC champion Good Counsel, and IAC champion Georgetown Prep.
