After some research I have added some results for Maryland wrestling in 1996. In some ways it was a different world for Maryland wrestling in others twenties years have hardly changed the major players in the sport.
Significantly for the time Maryland was operating under the 13 weight classes for the time 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 275. I wonder what some of those matches between a 189lb and a 275lb looked like. Must have been mismatches there.
On the National Prep scene DeMatha won the National Prep Championship and the at the time 2 year old private school MIS tournament. It was truly a remarkable team led by a four time national Prep champion Todd Beckerman at 125 who was named outstanding wrestler, runner up places in Billy Phillips at 140, and Robert Alexander at 145. Also on that team were Willie Harris, Drew Robertson and Wes Cummings.
In recent years Dematha has fallen off and Good Counsel has picked up the roll of big dog in the Washington Area wrestling scene.
There were only five teams in Carroll county with Westminster and Francis Scott Key sitting at top. Francis Scott Key made a remarkable run to finish as dual meet 1A/2A runners up.
As they did in 2016, Damascus finished on top of 3A/4A with the state tournament championship. There seems to be no let up with the Hornets as they have remained competitive in the upper tier of Maryland wrestling for the last twenty years.
Howard county was run by Hammond, who was still hosting one of the most competitive state wrestling tournaments in its Hammond Tournament, not yet shut down and replaced by Mount Mat Madness.
In the 1A/2A Division and in Baltimore County coach Guy Pritzker's Owings Mills repeated as state champions and would go on to be runners up in 1997. At this point they are in the middle of a six year run of making the semifinals of the 1A/2A dual meet tournament.
